Our journey begins from Rethymno and as we will be heading south, we will pass one of the most spectacular gorges of Rethymno, Kourtalionis. High cliffs and narrow roads make the experience of driving through the gorge truly breathtaking.
Later in the morning, we visit the monastery of Preveli, which is built on a hill at an altitude of 170m above the sea. Enjoy here a beautiful panoramic view of the Libyan Sea combined with the history of the Cretan resistance and liberation as during the Second World War it hosted more than 5000 allies who helped and fought the famous Battle of Crete.
The next stop will be the southern fisherman village of Plakias. During the 60s at the sandy beach of the village used to be a destination for Hippies which is not surprising given the magical scenery of the place. And the eastern part of the beach attracts today many climbers by its impressive vertical cliff that rises above the sea. Take a refreshing dip in the Libyan Sea before we resume our journey.
After we leave Plakias, we will be travelling along the southern coastline until we arrive at the charming town of Argyroupolis, where you'll find remnants of the ancient Lappa as well as landmarks that bear witness to the Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian eras. Below the village, you will find the famous Springs of Argyroupoli. Surrounded by the springs, you can have your lunch in traditional tavernas.
At last, as we slowly return north, we will stop at the Lake of Kournas, the largest natural lake of Crete that was created by the melting snow of the White Mountains. Discover the unique flora and fauna of this exceptional location before heading back to Rethymno.
